Paradip (Odisha):  Workers of the Indian Oil Corporation's oil refinery project in Jagatsinghpur district resumed work today, after four days of agitation protesting against firing by CISF personnel that left seven labourers injured.

The logjam ended following tripartite talks in which officials of district administration and IOCL and leaders of eight labour unions discussed demands of workers including compensation to the injured, transfer of CISF officials responsible for firing on July 2 and a high-level probe.

"The stalemate was resolved amicably during the talks as the workers agreed to resume work at IOCL's refinery project," Jagatsinghpur district Collector N C Jena said.

"After prolonged discussions, the unions agreed to withdraw their agitation with immediate effect. Work at Paradip Refinery Project site has resumed," a senior IOCL official said.

However, it would take five to seven days to mobilise the workers who left the project site in the past three days, he said.

Jena said it was decided that the company would pay Rs three lakh for the seriously injured worker and Rs 1.5 lakh each to two others who suffered injuries due to the CISF action. This apart, Rs 50,000 each would be paid to the other injured workers, the Collector said.

To look into the workers' other demands, a committee comprising officials of district administration and IOCL and labour unions was formed which is scheduled to meet on July ten to examine the issues, Jena said.

Work at the Rs 30,000 crore refinery project near here was affected since July 2 after CISF personnel opened fire to prevent labourers from entering the site without valid passes leaving seven persons injured.
