Unsafe school buildings to be demolished in Odisha

Bhubaneswar:  Pushed to a corner over the death of seven kids due to wall collapse of an Anganwadi Centre in Odisha's Nayagarh district, the state government today asked all the district collectors to demolish all unsafe buildings being used as class rooms for children.

The direction in this regard was issued by the Chief Secretary B K Patnaik while holding a video conferencing with district collectors.

"No child in Anganwadi Center or school should be under the threats of unsafe building," Patnaik told collectors adding that the children should be removed from unsafe buildings, if any.

Patnaik reviewed the progress in construction of Anganwadi Centre buildings in all districts. Collectors were also asked to ensure that no public health institution runs in an unsafe building.

Besides, the government also directed school authorities to provide good condition rooms for running of AWC wherever necessary.

Rural Development secretary S N Tripathy said that availability of safe drinking water within 250 meters of AWC and schools should be ensured without fail.

Tripathy also informed that each district has been allotted more 100 tube wells for AWCs and schools over and above the SSA (Sarba Sikshya Abhijan) tube wells.

Secretary Women & Child Development Arati Ahuja has instructed that each AWC should have a Sign Board on its front so that people can locate it easily.

In case of shifting, the new AWC building should be within the service area of the concerned center.

The Chief Secretary has instructed the collectors to demolish all unused and unsafe buildings and take up repair works of all old buildings from different permissible funds.
