Spread over 18,240 square metres, the terminal is a modern glass and steel structure and the interiors depict the culture of the state through stone sculptures, murals, paintings and textile hangings, an airport official told odishatoday.com.

The terminal will be inaugurated by Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ajit Singh Tuesday, he added.

The new terminal can handle 800 passengers simultaneously (400 arrivals and 400 departures). The centrally air-conditioned building has a modular design to facilitate future expansion.

The terminal has modern passenger amenities, which include in-line compatible baggage handling systems, escalators, elevators, flight information display System and CCTVs, the official said.

Mr. Agrawal said the Biju Patnaik Airport is spread over 836 acres of land and is capable of handling ‘D’ category B-767 type aircraft.

The airport handled 1.04 million and 1.25 million passengers during 2010-11 and 2011-12 respectively with a growth of 20.2 per cent.

The new domestic terminal building built at a cost of Rs 145 crore is equipped with the state-of-art services and passenger capacity of 800 (400 arriving and 400 departing).

The authority has planned to complete the work of aerobridge by June end, besides building a new technical block-cum-control tower.

Mr.Agarwal said that the authority has proposed the Odisha Government to prepare a state-based civil aviation plan to develop regional airports in the state keeping in view the Vision-2020 of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

Regional Airports including Jharsuguda, Jeypore and Gopalpur will be developed for the purpose.

“We have asked the State Government to hand over the required land for the Jharsuguda project which is in advanced stage. Once the Government hands over the land we will start the work to develop the airstrip since our plan is ready.”

Once developed, the airport will handle large flights though initially it was considered to handle small flights.

The AAI requires 190 acres of land to develop the airstrip with an investment of Rs 143 crore. The airport could handle 70-80 passenger aircrafts including ATR-72 like flights, he added.

Mr.Agrawal also informed that there was also a proposal to develop the airstrips at Jeypore and Gopalpur, which are under the disposal of the state government.
