Bhitarkanika park opens for visitors

The park authorities had put the restriction on tourists’ entry on December 24 as a measure to prevent noise pollution during the winter-fall census, said DFO Kedar Kumar Swain of Rajnagar Mangrove and Wildlife Division.

The census of the migratory birds was carried out for two days on December 29 and 30. As many as 15 teams, each consisting of forest personnel, ornithologists, bird experts and researchers carried out the bird counting under Swain’s guidance. The forest officials used traditional method, ‘Direct Sighting’, for counting of birds while the

wildlife researchers and ornithologists used spotting scope, binocular and cameras for the count.  Similarly, estuarine crocodiles were counted by 25 teams of enumerators in creeks, water inlets and nullahs on January 3.

Sources informed that nearly 12,000 tourists including 95 foreigners visited the park during the ongoing winter season. The park authorities have been collecting Rs 0 from an Indian visitor and Rs 1,000 from a foreigner for visiting the park. In addition they collect Rs 25 for use of a photo camera and Rs 500 for video recording inside the park.
