Chatrapur: The prestigious Berhampur Lok Sabha seat is all set for three-cornered fight in this election. The prominence of the seat came to fore in 1996 when the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao contested from here in a Congress ticket.

Odisha polls: Chhatrapur holds the key for Berhampur Lok Sabha result

It was in 1999 when BJP’s Anadi Sahoo snached the seat from congress and later BJD’s actor-turned-politician Sidhant Mohapatra too contested from the seat in 2009 and subsequently won by a margin of over 57,000 votes.

The ruling BJD government in the state has been in power in the five of the seven assembly segments namely Berhmapur, Chhatrapur, Gopalpur, Chikiti, Digapahandi, Mohana and Paralakhemundi falling under the constituency. As many as 11 candidates are the fray from across all political parties in Berhampur.

BJD’s Sidhhant Mohapatra, AAP’s Dhanada Kanta Mishra, BSP’s Ashwini Padhi, CPI(M)’s Alikishore Patnaik, Congress’s Chandrasekhar Sahoo , BJP’s Ramchandra Panda, SKD’s Bidhan Chandra Panda, TMC’s Manoj Choudhury and A Raghunath Barma,K Shyamababu Subhudhi, Sri Hari Pattnaik as independent.

While BJD’s is looking forward to improving its 2009′s tally by capturing all the 7 assembly segments, political analysts feel that strong anti-incumbency and Phailin impact could spill milk on BJD’s prospects.

Although the Congress candidate Chandrasekhar Sahoo had managed to secure more votes than his BJD counterpart in Berhampur, Mohana and Paralakhemundi assembly segments, he was outnumbered in the rest of the four assembly segments. However, opinion polls predict the political atmosphere has turned upside down only to favour the Congress candidate.

With the strong anti-incumbency , Modi-wave and BJD’s failure to forge alliance with left parties, Sidhant’s aspiration to Delhi could fall flat.

In a nutshell, with both Sidhant and Chandrasekhar each have support brimming from three assembly constituencies while the Chatrapur assembly constituency holds the key to decide which way the mandate is swayed.

For the first time the BJD has fielded a candidate in the communists stronghold Chatrapur area.
