Cuttack:  Amid show of brotherhood, the immersion festival of Goddess Durga was held today as all roads of Cuttack city led to the famous Devigada located on the left embankment of River Kathajodi here.

Durga immersion takes place in Cuttack

Elaborate arrangements have been made for immersion of over 160 idols which were worshipped at different puja mandaps. Police sources said at least three lakh devotees and revellers have gathered at the Devigada to witness the spectacular procession of the deities for their last sojourn.

As per practice in Cuttack city since time immemorial, the deities in procession march towards the Chandini Chowk mandap traditionally called the Raja Ghara mandap for a congregation called “Melan” where the heads of all the puja committees are felicitated by the Mahanagar Puja Committee in presence of the district and police administration.

Accompanied with spectacular tableaux, colouful flags, several music troupes and sparkling lights, the procession parties march towards the river bank and dancing to the tunes of the latest numbers for bidding adieu to the deities.

After umpteen numbers of rituals performed at Devigada, the deities are then immersed in the river waters.

If pandal-hopping is a treat for four days of the pujas, the immersion festival of Durga puja in Cuttack is a bonanza where people from far-flung areas throng the city for this colourful festival.
