Sambalpur: Alleging prolonged neglect of basic infrastructure, parents of students at Sarvejal primary school in Sambalpur district’s Jamankira block locked the school on Saturday, protesting lack of classrooms and a leaking roof.The school, which caters to students from Classes I to V, has only two classrooms. Parents alleged rainwater leaks through the roof during the monsoon, forcing children to study in unsafe and uncomfortable conditions. Following the protest, students attended classes and ate their mid-day meals outside the building.Villagers said they had repeatedly urged authorities to repair the school and construct additional classrooms, but their demands had gone unaddressed. “We have been complaining about the leaking roof for a long time. The children cannot study in such conditions. We were forced to lock the school,” said Sushant Kisan, a local youth.Kisan alleged that though funds were sanctioned for repairs, the work carried out failed to resolve the leakage problem. He said villagers submitted a written complaint to Jamankira block development officer. “Five classes are being run in just two classrooms, and even those are not fit for use. We have demanded two additional classrooms and proper repairs. Until the problems are resolved, we will continue our protest,” he said.Local resident Kalpana Arka alleged that Rs 1.84 lakh was sanctioned in Feb for repairs, but the work was unsatisfactory. She claimed the asbestos roofing sheets could be blown away by strong winds, posing a safety risk to students. District education officer Lakshman Bhoi said his office had not received any earlier complaint about the school. After being informed about the issue, he said a report had been sought from the teacher concerned and assured that appropriate steps would be taken at the earliest.
