Cops submit chargesheet within 18 days of FIR

Koraput: Jeypore Sadar police have chargesheeted an accused in a murder case involving the stabbing death of a Class X student within 18 days of registering the FIR, with investigators relying on forensic evidence, eyewitness accounts and online purchase records to establish the alleged involvement of an 18-year-old man and a juvenile.Police said the chargesheet was filed after a detailed investigation into the July 31 murder of 15-year-old Mahesh Bag, who had succumbed to a stab injury following a confrontation near his school in Bariniput. “The case was investigated on a priority basis and was chargesheeted within 18 days of registration of the FIR. The accused were apprehended within 48 hours and the investigation was subsequently strengthened through scientific and documentary evidence,” said SDPO (Jeypore ) Archita Mittal.Police said the blood-stained knife allegedly used in the crime was seized from the spot and sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL), Bhubaneswar, for examination. Investigators also served a notice on an online shopping platform under Section 94 of the BNSS. The company subsequently confirmed that the knife had been purchased through its platform by the accused, providing an important link in the investigation, police said.Statements of eyewitnesses were recorded under Sections 180 of the BNSS by police and 183 before a magistrate, Mittal said. Mahesh was allegedly stabbed during a scuffle that broke out after a dispute involving a Class IX student. Police had earlier said the juvenile accused, who was allegedly involved in the dispute, called his elder brother to the spot. The elder brother allegedly arrived with a knife, and Mahesh was stabbed when he intervened to defuse the confrontation.The two accused were detained and arrested within 48 hours of registration of the case. The adult accused was subsequently remanded to judicial custody, while the juvenile was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. The incident had triggered protests in Bariniput, with residents blocking the national highway near the local police outpost for two days, demanding the arrest of those responsible.
