Bhubaneswar: Joint parliamentary committee (JPC) chairperson Aparajita Sarangi on Wednesday said the panel has decided to hold wider consultations before finalising its report on the proposed legislation seeking disqualification of the Prime Minister, chief ministers and ministers who remain in jail for more than 30 days in serious criminal cases.Speaking to TOI about the panel’s deliberations, Sarangi said the process is confidential and has involved extensive discussions among senior members of Parliament. The committee has held several meetings, interacted with a couple of chief ministers, and consulted state govts as well as govt and non-govt organisations.She said the decision to defer adoption of the report was taken to allow a broader consultation process. Stakeholders have suggested improvements to certain provisions of the proposed legislation, she added, though she declined to disclose details at this stage.Sarangi maintained that the objective of the proposed bills has received broad support during consultations. She said the govt’s intent is to curb corruption and ensure that govts are not run from jail. “The spirit behind the Bills has not been questioned by anybody whatsoever. All have supported the intention of the govt,” she said.She said suggestions received so far relate to possible amendments to some provisions of the Bills and will be examined as part of the ongoing consultation process. “We are in for wider consultation,” Sarangi said, adding that the committee has already held several meetings on the issue.The JPC is expected to continue consultations before finalising and submitting its report.Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has appointed Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi as chairperson of the Joint Committee on the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Govt of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The 31-member committee has 15 MPs from the BJP.Sarangi, while releasing her report card from May 2019 to May 2026 at her office in Palaspalli in the capital on Wednesday, said library-cum-reading rooms are under construction in 69 of 156 gram panchayats in her constituency. Each library is being constructed at a cost of Rs 15 lakh. Similarly, block-level library, reading room and coaching centre buildings are under construction in all eight blocks of her constituency at Rs 53 lakh for each such facility.Sarangi said she has met and held discussions with several Union ministers, the Odisha chief minister and others to facilitate around 55 projects, including the Capital Region Ring Road, in her constituency. She said she has also served people through various govt welfare programmes. She added that she has asked 373 questions in Lok Sabha and participated in 73 debates.
