Balasore: At least 46 students staying at the ST & SC development department (SSD) girls’ hostel of Manatri Girls High School at Badasahi block in Mayurbhanj district were admitted to health centres with complaints of vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain late on Tuesday night after having dinner. Food poisoning or consumption of contaminated drinking water is suspected to have caused the illness, with doctors saying that all the affected students were stable.Mayurbhanj collector Hemakanta Sai said a detailed inquiry would be conducted to ascertain the cause of the illness, and strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty of negligence.According to sources, initially, a few students complained of vomiting, loose motion and stomach pain, but the number gradually increased to at least 35.The school authorities immediately arranged ambulances and other vehicles to shift the affected students to Manatri health centre.However, due to limited facilities and the condition of some students, several were later shifted to Badasahi community health centre. Doctors said they were out of danger.A special medical team has been attending to the students at the health facilities.Health officials are expected to ascertain the exact cause after testing samples of food and water collected from the hostel.Sai, meanwhile, visited both the health centres and inquired about the affected students. The collector directed the doctors to ensure proper and timely treatment.He also visited the Manatri SSD Girls’ Hostel and inspected the kitchen, dining hall and drinking water facilities.
