Headmistress suspended after Class x student gives birth; newborn dies

Balasore: The headmistress of a govt-run residential school in Mayurbhanj district was suspended on Thursday for alleged dereliction of duty after a Class X student, who was reportedly around seven months pregnant, gave birth on Wednesday morning.Sources said the 18-year-old student, who lived in the school hostel, complained of nausea and vomiting on Nov 3. School authorities initially took her to a local hospital, where doctors discovered during medical exam that she was pregnant. She was then referred to PRM Medical College and Hospital where she gave birth to a boy. The newborn, however, died while undergoing treatment on Thursday night.District education authorities initiated action against the headmistress, citing alleged negligence in the discharge of official duties. Block education officer (BEO) Biplab Kar said the headmistress had been suspended on the direction of the district education officer for alleged dereliction of duty. Kar said it is yet to be ascertained if school authorities had prior knowledge of the student’s pregnancy and how it remained undetected. The circumstances and facts would emerge only after a detailed investigation is carried out by a special team, constituted by the district administration, the BEO added.
