Bhubaneswar: A 32‑year‑old man, reportedly suffering from mental illness, went on a violent spree at Ganeswarpur village in Gop area of Puri district on Tuesday, attacking his elderly parents and three police personnel with a knife. All five sustained injuries and were admitted to the hospital. The man, Bichitra Rath, was brought under control with great difficulty by the injured police and later admitted to a nearby hospital. He was later shifted to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.Police said his family members had made a distress call to the control room after being unable to restrain him. However, when the police officers intervened, they too came under attack. “He has been suffering from mental disease for several months and is on medication. On Tuesday morning, he turned violent and attacked his parents with a knife,” said Gop police station’s inspector‑in‑charge Durga Mohapatra. His parents, both retired schoolteachers, managed to lock him inside a room before calling the police. “When our personnel opened the door, Rath lunged at them. Two assistant sub‑inspectors and a constable sustained stab injuries. One of the ASIs was stabbed in the chest. Despite injuries, they overpowered and disarmed him,” Mohapatra added.Local residents rushed the injured policemen to Gop community health centre. Doctors later said their condition was stable. Though police registered a case of attempt to murder against Rath, his arrest is unlikely given his mental condition. A villager, Prakash Behera, said the incident shocked them. “We have known the family for years. His parents are respected teachers. It is tragic to see them suffer like this,” he said.
