Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday reviewed status of construction of AIIMS Plus facility of SCB Medical College and Hospital Cuttack

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday reviewed progress of a mega redevelopment project to upgrade SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack into a world-class healthcare facility. At a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan, officials briefed the chief minister on the ongoing construction of four clinical blocks and a residential block on the SCB campus. The residential block is nearing completion, while the clinical blocks are expected to be completed by June 2027.Majhi directed officials to plan an additional medicine block and asked them to identify a suitable site and submit a proposal at the earliest. The meeting also reviewed progress of the multi-level car parking facility being developed in the first phase, along with other ancillary infrastructure works at the hospital. The facility is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve parking arrangements for patients, attendants, doctors and staff visiting the medical campus.“Expedite construction of the clinical blocks to ensure improved healthcare services for thousands of patients and attendants who visit SCB daily,” said Majhi, while directing officials in the meeting. He also directed the development of both sides of Taladanda Canal adjoining the hospital, widening of roads and beautification of the area to improve the surroundings of the medical campus.Majhi asked the departments concerned to complete the first-phase multi-level car parking facility and the traffic corridor linked to Taladanda Canal within the stipulated deadline. The parking infrastructure is expected to help address traffic problems faced by patients and attendants visiting SCB Medical College and Hospital and the nearby Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer. The project also includes integrated peripheral development and beautification of areas around Bose Engineering School, Biju Pattnaik Film and Television Institute of Odisha and Odisha State Maritime Museum. The chief minister directed officials to ensure timely completion of all works while maintaining quality standards. During the meeting, Majhi also took an in-principle decision that the Odisha govt would provide additional funds required for Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre being set up at Jatni from its own budget. The hospital is being set up under the Centre’s department of atomic energy on the lines of Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai. Initially planned as a 200-bed facility, its capacity has since been increased to 385 beds, leading to a rise in estimated construction cost.Tata Steel Foundation also provides financial support for the project. However, Majhi has decided that the state govt would bear any additional cost needed for the hospital. The funds wouc be used to expand bed capacity and strengthen other infrastructure facilities.A large number of patients from Odisha travel to Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital for cancer treatment. Once Jatni hospital becomes operational, it is expected to benefit patients not only from Odisha but also from across eastern India, according to an official statement issued by the chief minister’s office.Works minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, chief secretary Anu Garg and other senior govt officials attended the meeting.
