Bhubaneswar: A day after app‑based vehicle drivers went on a rampage during their protest near Lower PMG here, commissionerate police on Thursday razed their stand near Master Canteen, declaring it illegal.“We found that the land used by the online vehicle aggregators as a parking hub had been encroached on. We demolished the illegal stand with the help of Bhubaneswar Development Authority and dug up the entrance to block access,” a police officer said.Police said similar unauthorised parking lots and cab stands are under the scanner. “We have reports of anti‑social activities, including open drinking, at such places. These will also be cleared,” the officer added.By Thursday morning, 113 drivers and supporters were arrested, and 354 autorickshaws seized. The transport department also issued show‑cause notices to the owners of the seized autorickshaws. “We will initiate cancellation of permits. If other violations under the Motor Vehicles Act are found, registrations of the seized vehicles may also be cancelled,” a transport official said.Nearly 300 more accused are being hunted, with their photographs circulated at police stations across Odisha. “About 60 detainees were released on bonds of good behaviour. The arrests and seizures will rise as multiple teams are tracing the absconding accused,” additional commissioner of police Narasingha Bhol said.Seven FIRs have been registered at Kharvel Nagar police station in connection with the violence during which several Ama Bus vehicles engaged in public transport, police vans and private cars were damaged by the unruly protesters. Two FIRs were based on complaints from commuters, four from Ama Bus staff and one from police personnel. “The protesters pelted policemen with stones, causing serious injuries to several of them. Hence, stringent BNS sections, including attempt to murder, have been invoked,” Bhol said.Police investigators are verifying the criminal antecedents of the accused, if any, and probing whether outsiders, who are not drivers at all, joined the protest. Police also plan to initiate the process to recover the cost of damage to public property under the Prevention of Damage to Public and Private Property Act.With aggregator services stalled since Monday, city police have mobilised police control room (PCR) vans to ferry needy commuters, including patients, attendants and senior citizens, from Biju Patnaik International Airport to their destinations.
