Tehsildar held after Vig finds Rs 2.6cr assets

Rourkela: Odisha Vigilance on Friday arrested Muralidhar Urmal (57), tehsildar-cum-subregistrar of Lathikata in Sundargarh district, a day after intercepting him with Rs 5 lakh in suspected ill-gotten cash while travelling in his hired office vehicle from his office to residence in Rourkela.Vigilance SP, Rourkela, Harekrushna Majhi, said as he failed to explain the source of the cash satisfactorily, officials seized the money along with the vehicle.Vigilance teams conducted simultaneous searches at three locations linked to Urmal, during which officials recovered an additional Rs 5.74 lakh in cash from properties in Sundargarh and Rourkela.The searches also unearthed assets worth over Rs 2.6 crore, including a double-storeyed house of around 3,700sqft at Karmadihi in Sundargarh, six high-value plots on the outskirts of Sundargarh and Rourkela, around 600g gold jewellery, 635g of silver ornaments, and bank, postal and insurance deposits worth Rs 66.1 lakh, besides a four-wheeler and three two-wheelers.Further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the assets are disproportionate to Urmal’s known sources of income.
