Couple dies after taking herbal medicine from healer

Berhampur: A childless couple in Kandhamal district’s Gochhapada police station died after allegedly consuming the herbal medicine prescribed by a traditional healer. While Lalita Kanhar (35) of Nedipanga died on Monday, her husband Kanhu Kanhar (43) died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, sources said. Police said they are investigating the exact cause of death and searching for the man who supplied the herbal medicine.Sources said the couple has not been blessed with the child despite several years of marriage. Desperate for a child, they sought assistance from a traditional healer. The couple fell seriously ill after consuming it on Monday. Local people rushed them to Phulbani hospital, where the doctors referred them to MKCG medical college and hospital. The woman died on the way, while her husband died on Tuesday.Superintendent, MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Sudeepa Dash said post-mortem of the woman was conducted, while her husband’s autopsy is yet to be done. She might have died after consuming some poisonous substances, she said. Exact cause of death could be ascertained only after the post-mortem report comes in, she said.
