A major tribute is set to come up in Theni district for one of Tamil cinema’s most respected filmmakers, Bharathiraja. The Tamil Nadu Government has announced plans to build a memorial hall in his birthplace, complete with a bronze statue. The announcement has now received appreciation from actor and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan, who praised the government for recognising the director’s contribution to Tamil cinema. The proposed memorial is being seen as a fitting tribute to a filmmaker who brought the lives, emotions and landscapes of rural Tamil Nadu to the screen.

Kamal Haasan took to X to welcome the Tamil Nadu Government’s decision. He expressed his gratitude for honouring Bharathiraja in the land where the filmmaker was born. “My heartfelt congratulations to the Tamil Nadu government for announcing that a memorial hall will be established in the very soil of his birth for director Bharathiraja, who captured the scent of the earth on screen. This is a gratitude rendered in the fullness of time,” Kamal Haasan said in his post. His statement highlighted the deep influence Bharathiraja had on Tamil cinema and the importance of remembering artists who changed the way stories were told on screen.
Bharathiraja memorial hall to come up in Theni at Rs 2.5 crore
The memorial was announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly by Minister Rajmohan during the demands for grants for the School Education, Tamil Development, and Information and Publicity departments. According to the announcement, the memorial hall will be built in Theni district at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore. A bronze statue of Bharathiraja will also be installed as part of the project. The filmmaker, who passed away on June 10 after a prolonged period of health issues, leaves behind a remarkable body of work spanning nearly five decades. He was more than a director, mentoring a number of actors and filmmakers who went on to become successful themselves.
Bharathiraja’s legacy and Kamal Haasan’s upcoming films
Bharathiraja entered Tamil cinema as a director with ’16 Vayathinile’ in 1977 and went on to make films such as ‘Kizhake Pogum Rail,’ ‘Sigappu Rojakkal,’ ‘Alaigal Oivathillai,’ ‘Kaadhal Oviyam’ and ‘Mudhal Mariyathai.’ His work brought a strong sense of realism and rural life to mainstream Tamil cinema. His final directorial contribution was the ‘Paravai Kootil Vaazhum Maangal’ segment in ‘Modern Love Chennai.’Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan remains active on several projects as an actor and producer. He is associated with Sivakarthikeyan’s ‘Seyon’ and Rajinikanth’s ‘Dharman,’ while his collaboration with Anbariv is currently on hold. He is also expected to work on ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ and a reunion project with Rajinikanth and Nelson. The proposed memorial ensures that Bharathiraja’s contribution will continue to be remembered in the very place where his journey began.
