Keonjhar: A 42-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant near a pond in Keonjhar district on Wednesday morning, forest officials said. The deceased, Jayasing Gagarai, was staying at Dhobapitina village under Dhenkikote section of Ghatagaon range. He was originally from Gobara in Angul district.According to the forest department, Gagarai went to a pond where a herd of elephants was bathing. Despite being aware of the elephants’ presence and being warned by forest personnel not to venture near the area, he approached the pond. “The elephants chased him and trampled him to death on the spot,” said DFO (Keonjhar) Dhanaraj HD.The body was sent for postmortem and later handed over to family members. A forest officer said the deceased’s family would receive compensation as per govt norms.
