Bhubaneswar: A speeding car rammed into another vehicle from behind on NH-16 near Patrapada on Thursday, triggering an hour-long traffic snarl on the busy highway. Under the impact of the collision, the car was damaged, all four occupants travelling in it escaped unhurt, police said.The accident occurred during peak traffic hours on the Patrapada stretch, a key entry point to the city that witnesses heavy movement of vehicles throughout the day. The collision led to vehicles getting stranded on the highway, inconveniencing commuters until police personnel towed the damaged vehicles away and restored normal traffic flow.The latest mishap has once again brought into focus road safety concerns along Patrapada section of NH-16, which has witnessed a series of accidents in recent months.Two weeks ago, an Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) bus allegedly hit a biker near the same spot, leading to traffic disruption and inconveniencing commuters. In July, a hit-and-run incident on the stretch claimed the life of a man, raising concerns over speeding and reckless driving.Regular commuters said accidents have become frequent on the corridor and urged authorities to step up enforcement against overspeeding, improve traffic monitoring and implement traffic calming measures to make the accident-prone stretch safer for motorists.“I use the Patrapada stretch every day to commute to work, and accidents have become alarmingly frequent here. Vehicles often speed despite heavy traffic and multiple access points. Even a minor crash leads to long traffic jams, causing delays for hundreds of commuters. Authorities should strengthen enforcement against overspeeding and improve monitoring,” said Sanchit Mohanty, a resident of Khandagiri.
