Rourkela: Survival has brought little relief to Gunnam Jaykrishna. The 38-year-old from Bargarh district escaped a devastating flash flood in Nepal because he was at work on a higher ground, but his wife and two-year-old daughter remain missing after the settlement where they lived was swept away.Jaykrishna, a native of Sarala village under Jampali gram panchayat, was airlifted to Kathmandu with other rescued workers on Thursday. When he finally spoke to family members in Odisha later in the night, he broke the news that his wife, Gunnam Sai Bindu (25) and daughter Harixa had been missing since the flood struck.Jaykrishna works at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Nepal’s Rasuwa district and lived with his family in a village near the project site.His elder brother, Gunnam Dinesh Choudhury (40), said the family had been unable to contact Jaykrishna immediately after the disaster and feared the worst. “We finally received a call from him on Thursday evening. We are in complete shock over what he told us,” Dinesh said.According to Dinesh, Jaykrishna left home for work around 8.30 am on Wednesday. A senior official subsequently asked him to report to the powerhouse, which is located on elevated ground.“Shortly after he reached the powerhouse, a devastating flash flood hit the area. As he and several other employees were on higher ground, they survived. He later learnt that the village where his wife and daughter were staying had been washed away. They have been missing since then,” Dinesh said.Rescue operations are continuing, but there has been no trace of Sai Bindu and Harixa so far, he added.Jaykrishna and several other survivors were airlifted to Kathmandu on Thursday and accommodated in a hotel by the project authorities. Though he wants to return home, his travel documents and other belongings were lost when the house was swept away, Dinesh said.The family met Bargarh sub-collector Prasanna Kumar Pandey on Friday and sought the administration’s help to bring Jaykrishna back to Odisha. “Efforts are underway to facilitate his return from Kathmandu,” Pandey said.
