Bhubaneswar: Water levels in several rivers across north Odisha, including Brahmani, Baitarani, Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha, continued to rise on Monday following two days of intense rainfall under influence of a low-pressure system, prompting authorities to watch the situation closely.Despite the rising trend, officials said there was no immediate threat of flooding as all major rivers were flowing below warning levels. Baitarani at Akhuapada was flowing about half-a-metre below the danger mark, though some low-lying catchment areas experienced inundation.Water resources department engineer-in-chief Dilip Kumar Rout said the river levels were expected to remain below danger or warning marks. “The rising trend is unlikely to trigger any major flood situation,” he said.The assessment comes even as India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast a gradual decline in rainfall activity from Tuesday, with the rain-bearing system shifting towards western Odisha. However, isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue in some districts till Sept 2.IMD’s Sept monsoon outlook indicated that rainfall activity is likely to persist in the state. IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said north Odisha is expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall during Sept, aided by possible formation of fresh low-pressure systems over Bay of Bengal.“South Odisha, however, is likely to receive comparatively less rainfall this month,” he said. Odisha witnessed six low-pressure systems in Aug, two of which intensified into depressions, contributing to widespread rainfall across the state.According to an IMD bulletin, the low-pressure area that formed on Saturday over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north coastal Odisha has weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area and is expected to move west-northwestwards across north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal till Tuesday.The IMD has issued an orange warning for heavy rainfall at isolated places in Bargarh district on Tuesday. A yellow warning has been sounded for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Nuapada, Balangir and Sonepur districts.
