Rourkela: A man was arrested in Bonai forest division of Sundargarh district on Tuesday for his alleged role in the illegal trade in a live pangolin that has since been rescued.The arrested man has been identified as Raibu Munda (41) of Mahulata village under Lahunipada police station in Bonai subdivision.In a media meet on Tuesday, Bonai divisional forest officer Jasabanta Sethi spoke about the accused’s arrest and pangolin’s rescue .Based on intel inputs on Aug 30, two special teams were formed under supervision of Bonai assistant conservators of forest to check different places. Forest officials intercepted a car near Kenabheta on National Highway, while Munda was travelling in it. During questioning, he allegedly confessed to his involvement in the illegal trade and disclosed that when he came to know that forest officials were following him, he had hidden the live pangolin in an agricultural field at Mahulata village. The forest team subsequently took the accused Munda to the location and rescued the pangolin from the field.The rescued pangolin is reported to be around 3-feet-long and weighs around 3.5 kg. Accused Munda had brought the pangolin from a forest in Kuliposh forest range. A case has been registered against Munda under Wildlife Protection Act, and investigation is underway.
