There is a kernel of real chemistry behind the viral trick, but the internet version often makes it sound more universal than it is. A crumpled aluminium foil ball may help improve the appearance of some dull metal cutlery under certain conditions. But it is not a guaranteed dishwasher cleaning upgrade, and it certainly cannot replace proper detergent and regular dishwasher maintenance.
That may be the bigger lesson behind viral kitchen hacks: sometimes there is real science hiding underneath them, but the dramatic social-media version rarely tells you where the trick stops working. So, if your cutlery has lost some of its shine, a small foil ball may be worth experimenting with, provided your dishwasher’s instructions allow it. Just don’t expect one sheet of aluminium foil to turn an old, stained spoon into a brand-new one.
