Rourkela: The detention of a woman along with her two-year-old son following an excise raid in Sundargarh district on Thursday has raised concerns over the handling of minors during enforcement action.A team from Sadar excise station, led by sub-inspector Phula Sahu, raided a house in a village under Sadar police limits around 7 am following allegations of illicit liquor trade. Excise officials said a 34-year-old man and his wife were allegedly involved in the illegal sale of country liquor. During the raid, officials seized 10 litres of liquor from the house.According to the excise authorities, the man fled after spotting the team. His 29-year-old wife was brought to Sadar excise station, along with her two-year-old breastfeeding son. The child allegedly remained at the excise station for several hours while his mother was detained. Later in the day, the woman was formally arrested and produced before a court. The toddler also accompanied her to court, which subsequently granted her bail, following which she returned home with her son.Defending the action, sub-inspector Sahu said the couple were “habitual offenders”. “When we conducted the raid, the accused man fled. We seized 10 litres of illicit liquor from the house. Since his wife was also allegedly involved in the sale of illicit liquor, we brought her for further action. She came with her two-year-old son. During her detention, we provided food and ensured the child remained safe,” Sahu said.
