According to a report by Variety India, the Netflix original will explore the lives of legendary actor Meena Kumari and filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, whose celebrated love story eventually led to marriage. The project is currently in pre-production, with discussions around contracts and shoot dates underway.

Saif Ali Khan and Triptii Dimri could be coming together for a period drama centred on one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic couples. As per Variety India, the two actors are in advanced discussions to play the lead roles in Siddharth P Malhotra’s ‘Kamal Aur Meena’. The project is being developed as a Netflix original and is currently in the pre-production stage. According to the report, the makers are working through contractual discussions while also figuring out the actors’ shooting schedules. If the casting comes through, Saif would portray filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, while Triptii is expected to take on the challenging role of legendary actor Meena Kumari.

Kamal Amrohi, meanwhile, was a filmmaker and screenwriter whose work included the iconic ‘Pakeezah’, in which Meena Kumari played the lead. Their relationship developed into marriage, making their personal and professional journeys closely intertwined. The title ‘Kamal Aur Meena’ was announced on social media around a year ago, setting the stage for the long-gestating project. The film is being produced by Bilal Amrohi, who is the grandson of Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi. His involvement gives the project a direct family connection to the two central figures whose story it seeks to portray. With Siddharth P Malhotra attached to direct and Netflix backing the project, the biopic is now moving further into its development phase.
Several filmmakers have previously attempted a Meena Kumari biopic
Meena Kumari’s extraordinary life has attracted filmmakers for years, with several attempts being made to bring her story to the screen. Vidya Balan was previously linked to a Meena Kumari biopic backed by Pritish Nandy Communications but eventually stepped away from the project. In 2024, fashion designer-turned-filmmaker Manish Malhotra also revealed that he had decided against directing another planned biopic on the legendary actor. Kriti Sanon was reportedly attached to that version. Over the years, names including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra and Kiara Advani have also been associated with different attempts to tell Meena Kumari’s story.
