Bhubaneswar: The state govt is planning to transform a section of the State Botanical Garden at Nandankanan Zoological Park here into an ecotourism and environmental education destination, which will offer visitors an opportunity to experience nature after sunset while promoting awareness about biodiversity and conservation.According to a proposal, the initiative seeks to tap the botanical garden’s rich natural landscape, water bodies and thematic gardens to offer nature-based activities. A separate zone within the garden is proposed for the project, with visitor movement planned in a manner that keeps environmentally sensitive areas protected.Officials say the project is envisioned around the theme ‘Experience nature at night – learn, enjoy and conserve’, with a focus on conservation education and responsible ecotourism. The authorities have initiated the process of appointing a consultant to prepare plans for the proposed development and oversee its implementation. The proposal aims to create a regulated evening nature experience for visitors. “We want visitors to connect with nature in a meaningful way while ensuring that conservation remains at the heart of all activities. The objective is not mass entertainment but nature appreciation and environmental learning,” a senior Nandankanan official says. The proposal has generated interest among residents and regular visitors, many of whom believe the initiative could add a new dimension to the city’s tourism offerings. “People usually visit the garden during the daytime. An evening experience could be something unique for families and students,” says Suchismita Ojha, a resident of Patia.Tourists have also expressed optimism. “We often look for activities after sightseeing during the day. A nature-based evening attraction would be a refreshing alternative to conventional entertainment options,” says Rakesh Patra, a tourist from West Bengal.Environmental enthusiasts say the success of the project will depend on balancing tourism with conservation goals. “If planned carefully, such initiatives can create awareness about biodiversity while generating appreciation for protected natural spaces,” says Bijay Mishra, a city-based environmentalist.Notably, the State Botanical Garden is already an important destination for nature lovers, students and researchers. Authorities say that the proposed initiative has the potential to strengthen its role as a centre for environmental education while creating a new ecotourism attraction for the state.
