Bhubaneswar: The wildlife wing of the forest department on Saturday constituted a technical committee, comprising five members, to assess the health and other needs of the five rescued orangutans. The committee will be empowered to consult and co-opt other experts of national and international repute in the matter.A communication from the wildlife headquarters said in view of the seizure-rescue of five live orangutans in Balasore forest division and their subsequent housing in Nandankanan Zoological Park, the technical committee is constituted to address the welfare issues of the animals. The members of the committee are a veterinary official from Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysore; representative of the director of Wildlife Institute of India; the project coordinator of the centre for wildlife health, OUAT; a veterinary official nominated by the director of National Zoological Park, New Delhi; and the director of Nandankanan, who has been nominated as member-convener. “The committee will provide technical input for their upkeep. The tenure of the committee will be six months, which may be extended,” the order said.
