Jujutsu Kaisen
Written by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen, also known as JJK, is a dark fantasy supernatural manga mixed with adventure. Serialised in Shueisha’s shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump, its chapters are collected in 30 tankobon volumes. It follows the story of a high school student named Yuji Itadori who joins a secret organisation of Jujutsu sorcerers to defeat a curse named Ryomen Sukuna. Additionally, JJK is a sequel to Akutami’s old work called Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School.
Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku
Written by Yuji Kaku, Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is a psychological thriller dark-fantasy manga which has a lot of action too. Set in Japan’s Edo period, the series talks about the journey of a ninja, Gabimaru and executioner Yamada Asaemon Sagiri. They go on a journey in search of the elixir of immortality.
Dororo
For fans drawn to Demon Slayer’s historical setting and heartbreaking encounters with demons, Dororo is a compelling choice. The story centres on Hyakkimaru, a young warrior whose body was offered to demons by his own father. As he journeys through feudal Japan alongside Dororo, a young thief, he battles supernatural creatures while fighting to recover the body parts stolen from him. Along the way, the manga explores themes of humanity, sacrifice and the devastating impact of violence.
Claymore
Written and illustrated by Norihiro Yagi, Claymore is a dark fantasy manga with a mix of adventure, sword and sorcery. It follows the story of Clare who is a half human and half demon warrior on the journey for vengeance against a powerful awakened being who killed her mentor.
