Rourkela: A 29-year-old man was allegedly burnt to death during a confrontation at his girlfriend’s house under Reamal police limits in Deogarh district late on Wednesday night. The woman’s father was detained on Thursday and being questioned.The family members of deceased Silu Ray lodged a complaint alleging that he was murdered by the woman, her father, mother, brother and three other family members. Based on the complaint, Reamal police registered a case.“We are interrogating the father, Narottam Behera (55). The role of other family members named in the FIR is also being examined,” said B Kerketta, inspector in charge of Reamal police station.According to a preliminary investigation, Ray of Babarakote village was in a relationship with a woman from Laxmi Sahi Chowk, and they had frequent disputes. Police said Ray, who was absconding in a case under the SC/ST Act, returned to the area on Wednesday and went to the woman’s house around 10.30pm in an inebriated state.“Silu allegedly dragged the woman and poured petrol on both of them. Her father intervened, and a scuffle ensued,” an investigator said.While Behera managed to free his daughter, police suspect he subsequently poured petrol on Ray and set him on fire in a fit of rage. Ray died on the spot.Acting on a call made to the emergency helpline 112, police rushed to the scene and found his charred body. A scientific team and police officers visited the spot on Thursday and collected evidence. The body was sent for postmortem.
