Quincy Jones spent decades turning a 2.3-acre Bel Air hillside into a private estate designed around his life, music and love of entertaining. The late record producer bought the land for $200,000 in 1972, then commissioned architect Gerald “Jerry” Allison to create a sprawling custom home inspired by a luxury resort in South Africa. The finished residence, completed in 2002, eventually became a roughly 25,000-square-foot retreat with five bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, a recording studio, cinema, pool and tennis court. As reported by Mansion Global, the estate is now asking $34.85 million after previously being listed for nearly $60 million.
From a $200,000 plot to a custom-built estate
Jones did not simply purchase an existing mansion in one of Los Angeles’ most prestigious neighbourhoods. He bought a vacant 2.3-acre parcel in Bel Air in 1972 and spent years developing the property around his own vision. According to The Real Deal, Jones paid $200,000 for the land, which amounted to nearly $87,000 per acre at the time. He then brought in the late Gerald “Jerry” Allison, a luxury-hospitality architect, to design the residence. Allison had also worked on the Palace of the Lost City hotel in South Africa, and Jones wanted the Bel Air property to evoke a similar resort-like atmosphere.The house was eventually completed in 2002, meaning roughly three decades passed between Jones’ purchase of the land and completion of the residence. The result was a sprawling property built specifically around the musician and producer’s lifestyle. Mansion Global reports that the estate covers about 25,000 square feet and sits atop a promontory with 270-degree views.

The home also has multiple rotundas and an atrium that contributes to its resort-like character. The residence was also designed with Jones’ career in mind. The western wing includes a recording studio, screening room, gallery and security office, while the eastern wing contains the formal dining room, gourmet kitchen, butler’s pantry and family room. The private primary suite includes walk-in closets, a large bathroom, fitness room, den and balcony.The recording studio was particularly personal to Jones. Tom Fo, a senior design adviser at the architecture firm WATG, told The Wall Street Journal, that Jones kept an electric keyboard in the studio so he could play music at night. The space was also large enough to accommodate a group of musicians for recording sessions.
Outdoor space adds to the estate
The property extends beyond the mansion itself. Its grounds include landscaped gardens, multiple terraces and verandas, a full-size lighted tennis court and an infinity-edge swimming pool with a spillover spa. Its elevated position also gives the estate broad views across Los Angeles, toward the Pacific Ocean and the San Gabriel Mountains. The listing describes the property as sitting at the end of a cul-de-sac behind double gates, providing privacy while retaining its expansive outlook. The amount of usable land is also a significant part of the property’s appeal. Andrew Buss, one of the brokers involved with the earlier listing, told The Wall Street Journal, that finding this combination of flat land and views in Bel Air is unusual.

The asking price has fallen sharply
Jones’ estate first brought the property to market in May 2025 for nearly $60 million, several months after his death at age 91 in November 2024. The property subsequently underwent several price reductions. Mansion Global reported in June 2026 that the asking price had been reduced to $39.995 million in March before the home was relisted with a new brokerage at $34.85 million. The current listing confirms the $34.85 million asking price and describes the property as a five-bedroom estate with eight full bathrooms and nine partial bathrooms, with the listing recording 24,303 square feet of living space.
A home shaped by Quincy Jones’ imagination
For Jones, the estate was more than a luxury property. According to The Real Deal, his daughter, actress Rashida Jones said that her father loved the home and had created it from the ground up with his imagination. The property reflects the unusual breadth of Jones’ career. Known for his work with artists including Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra, the 28-time Grammy winner spent decades in music and entertainment, while his Bel Air home incorporated spaces for recording, entertaining, relaxing and hosting guests.Now, more than five decades after Jones acquired the land, the property is being offered to a new owner. What began as a $200,000 land purchase in 1972 eventually became a highly customised estate that took about 30 years to complete. In 2026, the Quincy Jones estate is back on the market at $34.85 million, carrying with it the architecture, views and musical history built into the property over decades.
