Sambalpur: Odisha vigilance on Wednesday arrested a panchayat executive officer in Bargarh district for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.The accused, Kartikeswar Behera, is posted as PEO of Katabahal gram panchayat under Gaisilet block in Bargarh district. He was also holding additional charge of Gaurenmunda gram panchayat.According to Sambalpur vigilance SP Pradyumna Kumar Dwibedi, an investigation revealed that Behera’s assets were around 300% higher than his known sources of income.Behera was produced before the special vigilance court in Bargarh on Wednesday. Vigilance registered a disproportionate assets case against him and his wife at Sambalpur vigilance police station.During searches conducted at locations linked to Behera, vigilance officials unearthed a range of movable and immovable assets. These included a two-storeyed building measuring around 6,500 sq ft at Kandagad village, an under-construction four-storeyed building spread over about 8,000 sq ft at Gaisilet, a 2,400 sq ft market complex at Kandagad and a 1,500 sq ft warehouse.The anti-corruption agency also detected 35 plots in the Gaisilet and Kandagad areas, cash worth Rs 3.05 lakh, an SUV, a tractor and four two-wheelers. Gold ornaments and household articles valued at around Rs 3.7 lakh were also found during the searches.Vigilance officials said the valuation of the properties is underway. Further investigation is in progress to ascertain the exact extent of the assets and examine Behera’s income and expenditure records.
