Sambalpur: Sambalpur cyber police on Thursday busted a major racket involved in illegally generating and selling fake SIM cards by misusing customers’ identity documents and KYC details without their knowledge. Three persons were arrested in this connection, said cyber DSP Ishwar Tandi.The arrested trio were identified as Suraj Bag (24), Malati Oram (29) and Sheikh Parvez (32) of Motijharan area.“Whenever a customer approached Suraj Bag for a new SIM card, he would activate a SIM in the customer’s name. However, without the customer’s knowledge, he would also activate additional duplicate SIM cards using the same KYC details and keep them with himself,” Tandi said.The accused would later sell these illegally activated SIM cards at higher prices. Through Sheikh Parvez, the SIM cards were allegedly supplied to cyber criminals in Jamtara, Jharkhand, at prices ranging from Rs 800 to Rs 1,000 per SIM.Police said the SIM cards were allegedly being used in various financial and cyber crimes across the country. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the group had activated and sold more than 200 SIM cards in this manner.During the investigation, police seized 120 sealed Airtel SIM cards, four mobile phones, bank passbooks, cheque books, house rent agreements, an Airtel 5G signboard and several affidavit documents from the accused.A special team of Sambalpur Police has gone to Jamtara to investigate the wider network and ascertain how far the racket extends. Further investigation is underway.
