Bhubaneswar: Hirakud Dam has lost 1.82 million acre-feet of its total water-holding capacity, according to a written reply by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also holds the water resources portfolio, to a question raised by Rengali MLA Sudarshan Haripal.As per the original project report of 1957, the dam’s dead storage, live storage and total storage capacities were 1.88 million acre-feet, 4.72 million acre-feet and 6.60 million acre-feet, respectively.However, the year 2000 assessment estimated the reservoir’s dead storage, live storage and total storage capacities at 0.87 million acre-feet, 3.91 million acre-feet and 4.78 million acre-feet, respectively. The figures show that the dead storage capacity has declined by 1.01 million acre-feet, while the live storage capacity has fallen by 0.81 million acre-feet.The decline has been attributed to heavy siltation in the reservoir, which has gradually reduced the dam’s water-holding capacity. Haripal had also sought details on govt’s plans for desilting the dam, but chief minister’s reply did not address the issue.Haripal further asked whether the state govt had prepared a digital database of people displaced by the Hirakud project. In his written reply, chief minister said no such database has been created so far.
