Veteran actor Mushtaq Khan’s family, friends and colleagues gathered in Mumbai on Friday, September 25, for his final farewell, a day after his death at the age of 75. At the funeral, his son Mohsin Khan spoke about the actor’s final days and revealed that he passed away with a smile. Mushtaq Khan, who died on September 24 at Nanavati Hospital following a battle with cancer, was remembered by several members of the film fraternity. Actors Rajat Bedi and Ali Khan were among those who attended the last rites.

Speaking to the media at the Yari Road Cemetery, Mohsin Khan reflected on his father’s health and described his final moments as peaceful despite the difficulties he had faced in the preceding months.Mohsin said that Mushtaq had been diagnosed with cancer, which was initially detected at an early stage but later progressed aggressively.“Woh pichhle kuch mahino se pareshan the- bilkul pareshan nahi the. Kyunki hasate hue hi unka ant hua hai, lekin haan, unhe cancer hua tha. Cancer pehla stage tha, lekin woh aggressive hote hue kaafi stage badh gaya, woh ho bhi pata nahi chal paya. Jab tak pata chal paya, tab tak bas duniya mein nahi hain. Lekin, ant unka muskurate hue hua hai.” (He wasn’t troubled at all over these last few months—not in the least. Because his end came while he was smiling, though yes, he had cancer. It was at the first stage initially, but it became aggressive and advanced rapidly through the stages without anyone realizing. By the time it was detected, he was simply no longer with us in this world. But his end came with a smile on his face.)He added that although the illness had progressed rapidly, his father’s final moments were marked by a smile.Mohsin’s account suggested that the family initially understood the cancer to be at an early stage, but its progression later became aggressive. By the time the extent of the illness was understood, Mushtaq’s condition had deteriorated considerably.
