Bhubaneswar: The deep depression over south Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh weakened into a depression on Friday, but continued to bring widespread rain across Odisha, disrupting road and rail movement, flooding low-lying areas and forcing evacuations in several districts.According to official reports, 63 places recorded more than 100 mm of rainfall and 161 locations received over 50 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. Tentulikhunti in Nabarangpur district recorded the highest rainfall of 395 mm, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.Heavy rain pushed several rivers above the danger or warning levels. Baitarani was flowing above the danger mark at Akhuapada in north Odisha, prompting Bhadrak administration to sound a flood alert in Dhamnagar and Bhandaripokhari blocks. Jalaka was also flowing above the danger level at Mathani in Balasore district, inundating low-lying areas. Budhabalanga, Subarnarekha and Salandi rivers were rising too.In Mayurbhanj district, a car with two occupants was swept away in floodwater. While one swam to safety, the other was rescued by locals.In south Odisha, Rushikulya was flowing above the warning level at Purushottampur in Ganjam district, while Vamsadhara crossed the danger level at Kashinagar in Gajapati district. Tel and Hati rivers were also in spate.Thousands of people in Ganjam and Gajapati districts were shifted to safer places by the district administrations. Uprooted trees blocked roads in Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts. Kandhamal administration extended the closure of Kalinga Ghat on NH-157 until further orders after a landslide on the ghat road.Landslides and soil slips were reported at Rauli, Lilliguma, Chhatriput, Maliguda and between Keutguda and Sikarpai in Rayagada and Koraput districts. Train services between Koraput and Jagdalpur were affected due to waterlogging and landslides on railway tracks. A 132 kV transmission tower collapsed at Maliguda in Koraput district. A portion of the newly built NH-53 at Hazari Chhack under Marshaghai police station in Kendrapada district caved in on Thursday night due to three days of rain.Revenue and disaster management minister Suresh Pujari said govt had taken all possible measures to deal with the situation. Engineer-in-chief of the water resources department Dillip Rout said five gates of Indravati Dam were opened to regulate the reservoir level.Head of the regional IMD centre in Bhubaneswar Manorama Mohanty said rainfall activity would continue till Saturday and reduce by Sunday.
