Kendrapada: A four-year-old student suffered serious burn injuries after accidentally falling into a pot of boiling water meant for cooking at a govt school in Kendrapada district on Wednesday, triggering outrage among parents and locals, who demanded strict action against those responsible for the lapse.Debanshi Das of Kadaligoradasahi under Nikirai police station limits was initially admitted to the district headquarters hospital in Kendrapada with burns on her back and abdomen and later shifted to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute of Paediatrics (Sishu Bhawan) in Cuttack, where she is undergoing treatment.Child development project officer Sujata Tripathy said a team has been constituted to investigate the incident.Das, a student of an anganwadi centre functioning at Jagannath Upper Primary School in Charigaon village, came to the kitchen with her grandmother when she accidentally fell into the utensil containing boiling water, according to anganwadi worker Itishree Parida.Cook Lilabati Nayak said she immediately rescued her.Headmaster Motiur Rahman said the anganwadi centre has a separate kitchen, but the child entered the school’s kitchen. “We are questioning the cooks, teachers and others to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident,” he said.Tripathy said after learning about the incident, they visited the centre and initiated an inquiry. “The team will submit a report, based on which appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible for negligence. The district administration is bearing all medical expenses of the child,” she said.
