Berhampur: Around 800 cyclists across age groups, along with their coaches, from different parts of the country gathered at Mahendragiri in Gajapati district for the four-day National Mountain Terrain Bike Cycling Championship, which began on Thursday. The championship is being organised under the aegis of Cycling Federation of India and hosted by Odisha Cycling Association with support of Gajapati district administration.The event was inaugurated by Odisha’s higher education minister Suryabanshi Suraj and science and technology minister Krushna Chandra Patra in presence of local MLA Narahari Panigrahy and district officials.Panigrahy said the championship would not only promote sports but also boost tourism by showcasing Mahendragiri’s cultural, spiritual and ecological significance. He described the hill range as a biodiversity hotspot whose natural beauty and challenging terrain make it an ideal destination for mountain biking.The championship has drawn top cyclists representing states and institutions across the country, including the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. Organisers said more than 500 of the participants are women.Participants have been divided into seven categories based on age and gender. The age groups include Under-14, Under-16, Under-18, Under-23 and elite categories. A total of 130 medals will be awarded across events, said P K Bisoi, a member of the organising committee and technical officer of the CFI.For the championship, organisers have developed a 4-km MTB track across the rugged terrain of Mahendragiri. The course includes a steep 3-km uphill stretch and a 1-km flat and downhill section, making it a demanding test of endurance and skill.“The national MTB championship is highly challenging because riders have to negotiate difficult uphill terrain. It will test both their stamina and technical ability,” Bisoi said.The cyclists qualified through their respective state associations and institutions. Winners of the championship will get an opportunity to compete in international events, organisers said.“We selected Mahendragiri for this prestigious event because of its natural suitability for mountain biking. The Gajapati district administration has also provided excellent support to host the championship,” Bisoi added.
