NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday picked former Olympian and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh for the post of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president. Singh replaced Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, who formally resigned from the post earlier in the day. His appointment comes just months before the 2027 Punjab assembly elections, amid prolonged factional tensions within the Congress state unit.
Who is Pargat Singh
A former captain of the Indian hockey team, Pargat Singh represented India at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympics and went on to receive the Arjuna Award and Padma Shri. He entered politics with the Shiromani Akali Dal and won the Jalandhar Cantt assembly seat in 2012. After falling out with the SAD leadership, he joined the Congress in 2016.He retained Jalandhar Cantt on a Congress ticket in 2017 and 2022, making him one of the party’s more consistent electoral performers in Punjab. He also served as a cabinet minister in the Charanjit Singh Channi government, handling portfolios including education and sports.
Why Congress picked Pargat Singh
Warring’s exit came earlier in the day after months of factional tensions within the Punjab Congress, with rival camp of Charanjit Singh Channi openly pushing for a change in leadership. With Sachin Pilot taking charge as the party’s Punjab in-charge, the high command began reassessing the state unit and looking for a way to bridge its internal divisions.Pargat Singh’s appointment fits into that effort. His selection reflects the Congress leadership’s search for a figure who could work across competing camps and bring different factions onto a common platform ahead of the 2027 assembly election.

Punjab politics is historically divided across three main regions: Malwa, Majha and Doaba. Pargat Singh’s base in Jalandhar Cantt also ensures that the Doaba belt has direct representation at the top of the state Congress, counterbalancing leadership influences from other regions. At the same time, Pargat is not a newcomer to the Congress organisation. His years as an MLA and former minister give him both legislative and administrative experience. His hockey background and association with sports and youth affairs also offers Congress a ready-made narrative around GenZ engagement and sporting development.
