Keonjhar: The death of a 55-year-old woman outside Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital in Keonjhar on Saturday has triggered outrage. The deceased, Sagi Munda of Rengalbeda village in Patna block, had reportedly been suffering from a prolonged illness. Her husband, Lanka Munda, said she was admitted to Patna community health centre a few days ago and was referred to Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital on Friday after her condition deteriorated. He alleged that she was discharged from the hospital on Saturday.Unable to navigate the situation due to poverty and lack of awareness, Lanka reportedly took his wife outside the hospital premises and laid her on a mat near the overbridge in front of the medical college. Witnesses said the woman remained in distress for several hours. While some passers-by and social workers offered her food, no immediate medical assistance reached her. She later died at the spot. The incident came to light after a video of the woman lying outside the hospital went viral on social media. Hospital authorities later reached the spot, but she had already died.Human rights activist Suraj Mohapatra alleged negligence on the part of hospital personnel. “It is the inhumanity of the medical staff and security staff. Therefore, proper action should be taken against the staff for this negligence. She must have been kept in the medical facility,” he said.Superintendent of Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital, Dr Mohendra Kumar Naik, said, “It was a communication gap between the staff and the victim. We later tried to help her, but she had already expired.”The circumstances leading to the woman’s discharge and subsequent death have raised concerns over access to emergency care and patient support mechanisms at the hospital.
