For 27 minutes, India looked ready to make Brazil work for every inch at Salt Lake Stadium. The Blue Tigers arrived with some confidence after holding 44th-ranked Panama to a 1-1 draw, but Brazil, ranked fifth, eventually showed just how wide the gap becomes when elite quality starts finding its rhythm.

India start boldly, and Brazil cannot find their rhythm

The 133-place gap between India and Brazil in the FIFA rankings was impossible to ignore before kick-off, with the visitors representing the highest-ranked opposition India have faced since the world rankings were introduced in 1992.Still, Khalid Jamil’s side did not spend the opening minutes simply sitting back and admiring Brazil. India kept their defensive shape tight, tried to close the passing lanes into midfield and repeatedly looked towards Manvir Singh and Ryan Williams when possession turned over.That approach also gave India an interesting way of dealing with Vinicius Junior. Rather than constantly doubling up on the Real Madrid winger, India often left him with space on the left and trusted their defensive line to catch him offside when he tried to burst behind.

Vinicius still caused problems, making several dangerous runs and forcing Gurpreet Singh Sandhu into important saves, but India largely prevented him from becoming the headline-maker Brazil needed. He was eventually substituted at half-time, having failed to find the net despite threatening repeatedly.At the other end, India were not entirely passive. For a brief spell, the crowd of around 51,000 had plenty to celebrate during those opening exchanges, especially when Ryan Williams and Manvir Singh began carrying the ball into Brazil’s half. India even won successive corners around the 27th minute, suggesting that perhaps this historic night could become a genuinely competitive contest.

Estevao breaks the resistance, then Pedro punishes India

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 28th minute, and it came from the sort of individual quality from Estevao that makes the ranking gap feel very real.The Chelsea-bound winger received possession on the right, worked his way inside and found enough room to unleash a powerful left-footed strike towards the near post. Gurpreet got a hand to the effort, but could not keep the ball out as Brazil finally found the opening they had been searching for.

India did not fold immediately, but Brazil were beginning to see more of the ball in dangerous areas. Pedro then rattled the post with a powerful header in the 36th minute, giving India another warning that their resistance was starting to crack.Six minutes later, the second goal arrived through a brilliant piece of combination play. Estevao spotted Pedro making a run behind Anwar Ali and threaded a defence-splitting pass into his path, allowing the Brazilian forward to shoot from a tight angle.

Gurpreet reached the effort and appeared to have enough of it covered, but the ball squirmed underneath his palm and slowly found its way over the line. Brazil were two ahead in the 42nd minute, and India had suddenly gone from believing in an upset to facing a serious second-half challenge.

Jamil changes his goalkeeper, but Lino takes over

Ryan Williams then came close in the 63rd minute after beating his man and driving into the box, only for Mauro Júnior to throw himself in front of the shot. Manvir went close again shortly afterwards, sending a rising effort wide from a narrow angleThose chances offered India a reminder that they could still hurt Brazil, but the response from the visitors was ruthless. In the 57th minute, Bijoy Varghese gave the ball away while trying to play out from the back, Brazil immediately pounced and Samuel Lino received possession on the left side of the box.Lino created the necessary space before curling a beautiful finish beyond Gill and into the bottom corner. Brazil had their third, and the contest was effectively settled.

Brazil finish the job, while India get a lesson to remember

India kept making changes, with Jamil eventually sending on Mehtab Singh, Macarton Nickson, Rahim Ali, Vikram Partap Singh and Farukh Choudhary for Anwar Ali, Anirudh Thapa, Apuia, Manvir Singh and Ryan Williams.There were still flashes of promise, although India’s possession increasingly stayed in front of Brazil rather than threatening their goal. Endrick also found space behind the defence, but one promising attack ended with his shot going wide and the offside flag already raised.Brazil wanted more, and they got it deep into stoppage time. Samuel Lino navigated the space around the edge of the box, cut inside and found a gap before unleashing a low drive towards the near post.The shot was struck with such pace that it squeezed through Gill’s palm and into the net in the fifth minute of added time. Lino had his second, Brazil had their fourth and the final whistle followed almost immediately.The result was harsh on an India side that had genuinely competed during the opening half-hour, but it also provided exactly the kind of experience Jamil’s team needed from this international window.India had already taken confidence from facing Panama, a World Cup-playing side ranked 44th, before stepping up dramatically in opposition quality against Brazil.

There is another heavyweight waiting immediately. India return to Salt Lake Stadium on October 6 to face Uruguay, ranked 20th in the world, giving Jamil another opportunity to test his players against a major international side.Brazil may have exposed the distance India still need to travel, but these are precisely the nights that can accelerate that learning. The Blue Tigers now have three days to absorb the lessons before another World Cup nation arrives in Kolkata.
