Veteran ghazal singer Talat Aziz and four others were hospitalised after a fire broke out at his Juhu residence on Friday night. The blaze filled the duplex apartment with smoke and lef t the occupants suffering from suffocation.Talat Aziz’s wife Bina, their sons Shayaan and Adnan, and Sikandar Singh were also reportedly taken to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital. Civic officials said all five received treatment on Friday night and were discharged on Saturday.Talat Aziz has lived in the building with his family for nearly four decades. The fire was reported at around 10.56 pm on Friday inside the five-storey building. According to TOI City, the flames spread to electrical wiring and installations on the ground floor. A sofa and split air-conditioner were also affected during the incident. The Mumbai Fire Brigade responded to the emergency and brought the fire under control by 11.58 pm. Officials have not yet determined what triggered the blaze.Talat Aziz recalled, in a chat with TOI City, on being downstairs when the fire suddenly erupted. He said his wife Bina was upstairs at the time. “It was a blazing inferno that erupted suddenly at 11.00 pm Friday. I was watching TV in the hall downstairs while Bina was upstairs. An air conditioner in the hall, which was not even switched on, sparked and emanated fire.”

Bina rescued from bathroom window

The situation became more dangerous as smoke spread through the residence. Talat Aziz said visibility inside the house deteriorated within minutes. Bina moved into the upstairs bathroom and sought assistance from the window. A neighbour then used a ladder to reach her and bring her out of the building.“Within minutes the blaze spread to the curtains, and blinding black smoke billowed out. I could not see a thing. I kept calling to my wife, fearing for her safety. She ran into the bathroom upstairs, turned on the shower and called for help from the window. A neighbour climbed a ladder and rescued Bina through the window. We were hospitalised for suffocation and took discharge Saturday,” he added. The family is expected to stay at a hotel until the damaged residence becomes inhabitable again. The fire also destroyed or damaged several belongings collected by the family over the years.

Singer loses valuable belongings

Among the possessions lost in the fire were Talat Aziz’s harmoniums and Bina’s paintings. The incident therefore caused significant damage beyond the physical impact of the blaze. Despite the loss, Talat Aziz said his primary relief was that his family and those present at the residence were safe. He also acknowledged the efforts of emergency personnel and neighbours who responded during the crisis.“I am profusely thankful to the police, fire brigade, ambulance who all arrived promptly and took charge. My neighbours have been so helpful too. We have lost precious belongings including my harmoniums and Bina’s paintings. But I thank Allah that we are safe and sound.”
