Bhubaneswar: DGP (in-charge) Vinaytosh Mishra on Tuesday directed all SPs and DCPs to prepare foolproof security plans for the ensuing student union elections and Durga Puja festivities, stressing the need for heightened vigilance to prevent violence, and maintain law and order.During a video conference with district police chiefs, Mishra asked them to implement robust preventive measures, particularly on college and university campuses, to ensure violence-free elections on Oct 15.“SPs and DCPs have been asked to prepare detailed SOPs and security plans. There is a need for heightened vigilance and proactive policing to ensure peaceful and violence-free student union elections. They have also been directed to strengthen security arrangements for ensuing Durga Puja celebrations,” Mishra said. The DGP instructed district police heads to hold coordination meetings with college principals and university vice-chancellors and work closely with educational institutions to prevent any untoward incident.Mishra also advised college and university authorities to tighten access control measures and prevent non-students from entering campuses and hostels to curb outside interference and minimise the possibility of election-related disturbances. “Strict monitoring and timely intervention can help prevent tension and violence,” he added. The DGP further directed SPs and DCPs to identify sensitive campuses and deploy adequate police personnel wherever necessary to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections.During the review meeting, Mishra also asked SPs and DCPs to accord top priority to women’s safety during the festive season. Referring to the recent alleged rape of an IT professional by a thief who had trespassed into her house in Bhubaneswar, he called for stronger preventive policing and enhanced vigilance. “Women’s safety must remain a key focus area. Officers should intensify patrolling, strengthen surveillance and take preventive measures to deter crimes, especially during the festive season when public movement increases,” said Mishra.
