Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department on Friday said a low-pressure area would very likely form over the Bay of Bengal around Oct 13, triggering rainfall in parts of the state next week, though the major five days of Durga Puja are likely to remain dry. This low-pressure system is expected to develop under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, currently in the Gulf of Thailand and likely to emerge in Andaman Sea on Oct 11.Manorama Mohanty, head of the regional IMD centre, said rainfall activity is likely to increase slightly in parts of the state on Oct 14 and 15 under the influence of the system. There is no indication of further intensification of the system so far, she added.Former director of the regional IMD centre, Sarat Chandra Sahu, said the possible system would trigger rainfall, mostly in coastal pockets, for two to three days from the evening of Oct 13. The state, however, is likely to witness dry weather during the major Durga Puja days, Sahu added.Meanwhile, a few places in the state received light to moderate rainfall in the last 24 hours. Jamda in Mayurbhanj recorded the highest rainfall of 52 mm, followed by Shamakhunta in the same district at 36.3 mm during the period, said the IMD rainfall report in the morning. The IMD forecast of the possible system came amid withdrawal of monsoon from parts of the state on Thursday. An official release from the IMD said the monsoon has withdrawn from most parts of Bargarh, some parts of Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bolangir, Nuapada and Nabarangpur districts. The IMD said that conditions would be favourable for further withdrawal of the monsoon from some more parts of eastern India, northern peninsula and many parts of northeast India during the next three-four days.Significantly, the state received 29% excess rainfall, compared to normal, during the monsoon period from June to Sept.
