Keonjhar: A fast-track court in Keonjhar on Monday sentenced a 40-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him for raping a 20-year-old woman. Additional district and sessions judge (Fast Track Court) Bijay Kumar Mishra convicted the man. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional one year of imprisonment.According to special public prosecutor Patitapaban Natha, the incident took place on Pana Sankranti on April 14 last year when the woman had gone to a forest near her village to graze cattle. Hembram, who was also grazing cattle in the area, allegedly grabbed her from behind, dragged her deeper into the forest and raped her.The survivor initially did not disclose the incident to her family out of fear. However, after her menstrual cycle stopped, she informed her family members, following which a complaint was lodged with Telkoi police. Police registered a case on Aug 2, 2025, and arrested the accused.After examining witness testimonies and the investigation report, the court found Hembram guilty and pronounced the sentence. The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority to provide compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the survivor. Investigating officer Swadhin Sethi conducted the probe and filed the chargesheet.
