A new housing development in Los Angeles will provide 97 permanent apartments to women and survivors of violence who have experienced homelessness, with American singer Miley Cyrus’ foundation contributing $1 million towards the project. The apartments are being built at Rosa’s Place in the city’s Skid Row neighbourhood by the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC), which expects the development to open in 2027.The contribution was announced on October 10 at a fundraising event organised by DWC, Imprintent reported. During the event, the organisation also honoured Cyrus and her mother, Tish Cyrus-Purcell, for their involvement in its housing programmes. The event raised $3.2 million, including the amount pledged by the Miley Cyrus Foundation. The new apartments will form part of DWC’s existing campus in downtown Los Angeles. According to its official website, the organisation has spent nearly five decades working with women and survivors of violence, providing accommodation and services intended to help them achieve greater stability. Rosa’s Place is the latest addition to that work.Cyrus and her mother have also visited the centre, met women receiving assistance and helped with improvements to residential and shared spaces. Their involvement extends to discussions about the interior design of the new building.
A closer look at Rosa’s Place
Rosa’s Place is one of the projects being funded through DWC’s HOME Campaign, an initiative focused on increasing housing and services at its downtown campus. The development is intended to provide more than just residential accommodation. Alongside the 97 apartments, DWC plans to establish a service hub within the building, allowing residents to receive additional assistance as they work towards maintaining stable housing. An important part of the project is its trauma-informed approach which takes into account the experiences of women and survivors who may have faced violence or homelessness. DWC says the housing and support facilities are being developed around the needs of the people who will use them.
Miley Cyrus and her mother’s role
Miley and Tish have contributed ideas for renovations at the downtown campus. Their involvement has also included meeting women who use DWC’s services. “One of the most meaningful parts of our partnership has been meeting the women at DWC and hearing their stories. Their strength, resilience, and hope stay with me long after I leave,” Cyrus said as quoted by ImprintentTish has also spoken about the importance she places on the surroundings in which women receive assistance. “I’ve always believed that home is our safe place and can have a powerful impact on how we feel. Helping design spaces at DWC where women can rest, heal, and look toward the future means so much to me,” she said.
Raising $3.2 million
The announcement formed part of the 2026 Every Woman Housed Gala, an annual fundraising event organised by DWC. This year’s gathering took place under the theme It All Starts at Home and was hosted by actor, writer and producer Natasha Rothwell.Nearly 600 people attended, including community leaders, advocates, corporate representatives and other supporters of the organisation. Before the foundation’s contribution was announced, the event had generated $2.2 million through donations, sponsorships and ticket sales. The additional $1 million brought the overall amount raised to a record $3.2 million.Apart from Miley Cyrus Foundation, organisations who supported the event included Arrillaga Foundation and Maybelline New York, among others.
