Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island home looks like a dream by the sea, but long before the pop star owned it, the sprawling house in Watch Hill, known as Holiday House, belonged to one of America’s most eccentric and fascinating socialites, Rebekah Harkness.Harkness was no ordinary homeowner. Her life was mired in controversy, and people talked about her constantly. She was wealthy, bold, and never shy about doing things her own way, which made her a person everyone wanted to talk about.Years later, she came into the spotlight in 2013, when Swift bought Harkness’ former home in Watch Hill for a whopping $17 million in cash. She soon learned about the woman who had lived there before her.In 2020, Swift turned that fascination into music. Her song “The Last Great American Dynasty,” from the album Folklore, tells the colourful tale of Harkness and the house that inspired her to write the song. It also brings the story full circle by placing Swift herself in the same home.So who was Rebekah Harkness, and why does her story still fascinate people today? Let’s take a closer look together at her life and taylor Swift’s song

The Rhode Island mansion Taylor Swift sang about once belonged to heiress Rebekah Harkness

Taylor Swift’s seaside home in Rhode Island has a past that is just as dramatic as her music. According to People report, the house, known as Holiday House, was once owned by socialite Rebekah Harkness, an heiress, arts patron and famous hostess who became the inspiration for Swift’s 2020 song “The Last Great American Dynasty” from the album Folklore.

Who was Rebekah Harkness?

Harkness was born as Rebekah West in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1915, and her life changed dramatically in the 1940s after her first marriage, to photographer Dickson Pierce ending in divorce. She then met businessman William Hale Harkness, an heir to the Standard Oil fortune, while spending a summer in Watch Hill. They married in 1947 and William, her husband bought the Holiday House in around 1948.

Why was Rebekah a huge topic of discussion?

After William died in 1954, Rebekah inherited a large fortune and had the freedom to follow passions she had long been told to hold back. According to a People report, Craig Unger’s 1988 biography Blue Blood says that she turned Holiday House into a gathering place for creative people, with names such as Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol and Gene Kelly in her circle, and her parties became no less than a local legend, as did her feuds with neighbours and her habit of ignoring social rules.

Taylor Swift’s song tells her story

Many of these stories found their way into “The Last Great American Dynasty”, where the lyrics talk about the neighbourhood gossip, lavish entertaining and Harkness’s talent for stirring up trouble among the neighbours. There are also popular stories about her breaking rigid society rules and cleaning her swimming pool with champagne. In the chorus, Swift summarises her as someone who enjoyed causing chaos, and that much of the internet rushed to ask who she was when the album came out. The song ends with Swift stepping into the story herself, revealing that she is the one who bought the house, as the magazine also points out.

Holiday Home now belongs to Taylor Swift

Harkness sold Holiday House in the 1970s and died in 1982 at age 67. The Wattles family bought the home in 1974 and renamed it High Watch, the name it is known by today. Swift bought the property in 2013 for $17 million in cash, according to TMZ. Swift has hosted gatherings there, including her Fourth of July parties, and decades on, the old mansion still has a way of making headlines, one party and one song at a time.
