Fresh bay low pressure may trigger rain from Oct 27
Clouds over Bhubaneswar on Thursday

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to witness widespread rainfall activity for at least two to three days from Oct 27 under the influence of a fresh low-pressure area brewing over Bay of Bengal, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday. The weather agency said heavy rainfall is likely in several districts during the period.According to IMD’s latest forecast, the fresh weather system is expected to form on Friday and move west-northwestwards, with possibility of further intensification. However, its exact track and intensity remain uncertain at this stage.Head of the regional IMD centre, Manorama Mohanty, said the state has high chances of rainfall next week under influence of the system, with heavy rain warnings for several districts. She said the system’s intensity and path would become clearer after its formation and subsequent movement over Bay of Bengal. In its extended-range outlook issued on Thursday, IMD indicated a high probability of the system intensifying into a depression around Oct 25. Thereafter, it is likely to move west-northwestwards and strengthen further over the following three days. The outlook also warned of squally weather over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central and southeast Bay of Bengal, with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph gusting up to 70 kmph by Oct 25.Wind speeds are likely to increase further, reaching 70-80 kmph and gusting up to 90 kmph from Oct 26. IMD said the winds could strengthen further as the system moves west-northwestwards and intensifies up to Oct 28.Given the possibility of intensification, IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal from Oct 23 to 25 and into the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal from Oct 26 to 28.The weather office also asked fishermen to plan their activities in accordance with the latest area-specific advisories between Oct 23 and 29. Shipping, port and offshore operators have been advised to review operational preparedness and monitor subsequent forecasts for possible restrictions on weather-sensitive activities during the same period.Former regional IMD director Sarat Chandra Sahu said several weather models suggest that the system could intensify over Bay of Bengal, though its eventual track and strength remain uncertain.“It would be too early to make any definite assessment about the system,” Sahu said.He added that favourable conditions could allow the system to intensify from a deep depression into a cyclonic storm, but its eventual intensity remains uncertain.
