Rourkela: A 14-year-old boy was detained by Bijepur police in Bargarh district on Friday for allegedly strangling a seven-year-old boy to death following a dispute over a fishing hook. The victim’s family members gheraoed the Bijepur police station demanding a thorough probe into the case. The seven-year-old was missing since Wednesday afternoon. His body was recovered at an isolated spot late on Thursday night.Police sources said the victim had gone fishing after lunch with his 11-year-old elder brother and two other boys, aged 13 and 14, from the same village. The group first tried fishing in a water-filled well and later moved to a nearby pond. Police said the seven-year-old had brought a fishing hook, and an argument broke out when the 14-year-old allegedly asked for it and the boy refused.While returning home, the group split up. The victim and the 14-year-old took one route, while the victim’s elder brother and the 13-year-old took another. Police alleged that the accused lured the child to a secluded place and strangled him with a towel.When the boy did not return home, his family launched a search and questioned the other boys. The accused allegedly claimed he had no knowledge of the victim’s whereabouts. A missing complaint was lodged at Bijepur police station on Wednesday night.Police detained the 14-year-old on Thursday and, during questioning, he allegedly confessed. Based on his statement, police recovered the body from the spot identified by him. A scientific team visited the scene on Friday and collected evidence. The body was seized and sent for postmortem examination.Angry family members staged a protest outside the police station, demanding a more detailed investigation into the murder. “We have detained the minor accused and further investigation is underway,” said SM Mohanty, IIC, Bijepur police station.
