Kendrapada: An unclean and unsafe cyclone shelter at seaside Pentha village under Rajnagar block in Kendrapada district was cleaned and made ready with all amenities on a war footing on Monday, following the directions of revenue and disaster management minister Suresh Kumar Pujari. The state govt had built the shelter in 2000 after the 1999 super cyclone.Earlier, the locals had alleged that an unsafe roof and a lack of basic facilities, among other problems, were plaguing the multipurpose cyclone shelter. Toilets and washrooms were either dirty or completely unusable. After knowing about its uninhabitable condition, the minister directed the district administration to depute the Rajnagar block development officer to inspect the cyclone shelter and ready it for the villagers. The cyclone shelter was soon cleaned and a generator fitted. The administration has stocked dry foods and other items, and directed some locals, who were using the nearby area as a cattle shelter, to remove the animals, said BDO Ashok Mohanty.Cyclone shelters are otherwise meant to be used as school or community centre.
