In July, the Kansas City Current took a major step towards making soccer more accessible to young players by launching a free youth league in Kansas City’s historic Northeast neighborhood. The initiative aims to remove financial barriers that often prevent children from joining organized sports, while giving them a chance to develop their skills and pursue their dreams. With free uniforms, cleats and equipment, the program offers more than a place to play. It creates an opportunity for families to connect, young athletes to grow and local communities to build a lasting relationship with the game.

Kansas City Current opens doors with its no-cost youth soccer league

The league began on July 11 at the 9th and Van Brunt Athletic Fields Park, bringing together around 120 children aged 8 to 10 across eight teams. Players from organizations such as Estrella De Oro, Guadalupe Centers and Mattie Rhodes Center received uniforms, shin guards and Nike cleats without paying a fee.The initiative, presented by CVS Health, aims to increase youth soccer participation, particularly among girls. It also offers support for coaches and referees, helping build a stronger foundation for the sport in the area.Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, Missouri Senator Barbara Washington, Kansas City Current co-founders Angie and Chris Long, and National Women’s Soccer League commissioner Jessica Berman attended the launch. The Current selected the Northeast after consulting local youth soccer organizations about where free playing opportunities were needed most. The area’s recently renovated turf fields also offered a practical home for the program. For families, the savings can make a real difference. Daniel Hernandez, whose nine-year-old daughter Ruby plays for Ryogoku Academy, described the financial pressure of finding an affordable team.“Everything’s expensive,” Hernandez told The Star. “It was pretty hard to find a team like this because her last team, it was 20 bucks here, 20 bucks there, 40 bucks over here, $60 for a uniform. So this is a huge difference, actually.”

The Kansas City Current is owned by Angie and Chris Long, along with co-owners including Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes. The club’s community-focused initiative reflects how professional soccer organizations can help create opportunities beyond the field. The program also plans to pay stipends to coaches, who often volunteer their time, and offer teenagers aged 14 and older a pathway to become certified referees. This could give local teens an early chance to earn money while gaining valuable experience.Nine-year-old Margarita Lopez of Estrella De Oro captured the importance of the opportunity during the opening ceremony.“Before, it wasn’t always easy to find a place to play,” Lopez said in her speech. “But now, I can come here with my friends and family and do what I love most.”The league runs through August 29. Its wider goal is to connect families with additional community resources and help more children discover soccer without worrying about the cost. By investing in young players today, the Kansas City Current is working to build a more inclusive future for the sport.
